NORTH CAROLINA MESOTHELIOMA ATTORNEY
Free legal consultation for North Carolina residents diagnosed with work-related asbestos disease
Have you or someone you care about been diagnosed with asbestos-related mesothelioma cancer? A North Carolina mesothelioma attorney affiliated with our firm has provided lawsuit information here, with background data on the state’s high incidences of mesothelioma disease, the signature asbestos-related cancer caused by worksite asbestos exposure.
Asbestos disease is easily preventable when employers and asbestos product manufacturers invest in safe worksite conditions for their workers. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Nearly 3,000 individuals are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year in the United States because of this negligence, and many of them file suit and obtain significant compensation for an illness that should have been prevented.
Health report on North Carolina asbestos disease
November 2, 2010 – Compared with other states in the nation, North Carolina is ranked No. 13 for deaths related to asbestosis and mesothelioma, and records a high concentration of asbestos-related mortalities centered around Charlotte and Raleigh, according to an independent study of state death certificates filed between 1979 and 2001.
The national study is based on an examination of U.S. death certificates recorded by the federal government between 1979 and 2001 and reviewed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public research information organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
According to the organization’s report, asbestosis and mesothelioma killed up to 1,410 individuals in North Carolina between 1979 and 2001. Of these, asbestosis claimed 503 lives, and up to 917 North Carolina residents died of mesothelioma, the most lethal of asbestos-caused cancers.
These figures, says the study, “likely represent less than 20 percent of total asbestos mortality during that time,” because, “mesothelioma was not tracked by the federal government as a cause of death until 1999.”
Numerous deaths from asbestos disease were also recorded along North Carolina’s Atlantic coastline, where shipyard workers ply their trade. Workers from the construction, automobile and shipyard repair industries have historically been the most susceptible to asbestos exposure and the diseases it leads to.
When the government began tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death in 1999, U.S. mortality from asbestos illnesses more than doubled that year to 2,343 deaths, up from 935 deaths recorded the previous year.
Most cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed decades after worksite asbestos exposure. Asbestos is no longer mined in the United States, but it is still imported and used in construction and automotive products, like brakes and clutches. Large quantities of asbestos still remain in older public buildings, and will eventually have to be removed.
