Canadian Minister Chuck Strahl secures millions for his constituency, while fighting a personal battle against mesothelioma
News from Weitz & Luxenberg’s Nunavut asbestos lawyer follows:
Iqaluit, Nunavut (March 31, 2009) – Indian and Northern Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl, who has not let his long personal battle against mesothelioma slow down his work for the public, today identified $55 million in funding to rebuild and refurbish 20 Arctic research centers from Yukon to Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The pillars of our northern strategy are underpinned in every way by northern science,” Strahl said Tuesday in Iqaluit, where he announced the last six projects to be funded. He announced the previous 14 projects Monday in Yellowknife.
The money will be used to build a new, state-of-the-art facility in one of three Nunavut communities. A study is underway to determine which of the communities would be the best location for the facility – Cambridge Bay, Pond Inlet or Resolute.
Canadian Minister Chuck Strahl
Chuck Strahl’s cancer story is a high-profile example of the current asbestos threat workers face every day in Canada. A recent report on workplace fatalities produced by the Centre for the Study of Living Standards in Ottawa, Ontario, identified Canada’s manufacturing, construction and mining industries as the country's most dangerous industries for occupational asbestos exposure and disease.
Chuck Strahl was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2005. Prior to his career in politics, Strahl worked as a contractor in Canada's logging industry, where he spent years inhaling asbestos brake dust from heavy equipment.
Strahl, 51, has fought mesothelioma valiantly and is still active in Canadian politics. He was first elected to Parliament in 1993, and was appointed Minister of Agriculture in 2006. He currently serves as Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
