OKLAHOMA ASBESTOS
The asbestos-laden oil fields of Oklahoma set the stage for deadly work-site conditions
California, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania are the nation’s leading states for asbestos-related mortalities, according to a national study of state death certificates – which ranked Oklahoma at No. 33.

June 14, 2010 – Oklahoma relies heavily on its oil production industry – one of the most hazardous industries in the country for job-related asbestos exposure. That’s because oil refineries have long depended on asbestos and asbestos-based products to protect workers against the outbreak of fires, a very real hazard in the oil production business.
Compared with other states in the country, Oklahoma ranks No. 33 for asbestos-related deaths due to asbestosis and mesothelioma. Most asbestos-related deaths in the state were recorded in the urban areas of Oklahoma City and Tulsa, says a national study.
Oklahoma asbestos study
The study was based on an examination of state death certificates recorded by the federal government between 1979 and 2001. The results were published by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public information organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Mesothelioma is the signature asbestos-related cancer and is diagnosed in 3,000 people every year in the United States. It is primarily caused by occupational asbestos exposure brought on by employers and asbestos product companies that overlooked worker health safety in favor of greater profit margins.
According to the study, asbestos exposure killed at least 334 people in Oklahoma between 1979 and 2001. This figure, however, “likely represents less than 20 percent of total asbestos mortality during that time,” the report says, because “mesothelioma was not tracked by the federal government as a cause of death until 1999.”
Legal options
Legal observers maintain that Oklahoma victims of asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma often file asbestos claims out of state in the belief that Oklahoma’s financial settlements are comparatively low.
Weitz & Luxenberg is a legal force in this field, having protected the rights of asbestos-injured workers for 25 years. And in that time the firm's mesothelioma lawyers have won several billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for retired workers diagnosed with job-related mesothelioma.
