OKLAHOMA MESOTHELIOMA
Asbestos saved Oklahoma’s oil industry workers from fires, but its toxic properties killed more workers than it saved
Oklahoma mesothelioma news roundup.
April 29, 2010 – In the past, Oklahoma relied heavily on its oil production industry – one of the most hazardous industries in the United States for job-related asbestos exposure.
That’s because the state’s oil refineries depended on asbestos to protect workers against the fire hazards that are inherent in the oil production business.
Asbestos exposure occurs when microscopic asbestos fibers become airborne at a site and are inadvertently breathed in by oil workers. Thousands of workers who were exposed this way acquired fatal diseases, including the deadly signature asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.
Oklahoma mesothelioma study
During a study period beginning in 1979, Oklahoma reported many more fatalities from mesothelioma than from asbestosis, another harmful disease. Seventy percent of the 334 residents who died from asbestos exposure died from mesothelioma. Most of the patients lived around Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
Compared to the rest of the country, Oklahoma ranks No. 33 for mesothelioma deaths, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public information organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Oklahoma mesothelioma lawsuit
Legal observers maintain that Oklahoma victims of asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma – who contemplate filing an asbestos cancer claim – often file suit out of state in the belief that Oklahoma’s financial settlements are comparatively low.
