Motorcycle highway fatalities continue to rise
October 3, 2008 -- The number of motorcyclists killed on the nation’s highways rose for the ninth straight year in 2007, and statistics show that fatalities have more than doubled since 1998, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“If the motorcycle accident was not another driver’s fault, lack of training and poor choices like drinking and driving can lead to a motorcycle crash,” said a seasoned Pennsylvania accident lawyer at Weitz & Luxenberg.
National motorcycle accident statistics
National statistics show that motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled since 1998. Out of a total of 41,059 motor vehicle fatalities in 2007, 13 percent, or 5,154, were motorcyclists. By comparison, only 2,294 motorcyclists died in 1998 out of a total of 41,501 fatalities that year.
In 2007, motorcycle deaths rose 6.6 percent and injuries from motorcycle accidents rose 17 percent.
Pennsylvania motorcycle accident statistics
In Pennsylvania (PA) alone, 1,491 people died in motor vehicle accidents, with 500 (or 34 percent) attributed to alcohol-impaired drivers. Alcohol played a part in the deaths of 80 motorcyclists in Pennsylvania last year, said the NHTSA.
