Car Wreck Pile-Up
A pile-up is a chain reaction of many car crashes triggered by an initial car crash usually at high speeds. The initial crash would happen so suddenly that other cars traveling in the same direction would have little to no time to react to the accident, there by also crashing and perpetuating the chain.
Pile ups usually happen during poor visibility due to bad weather conditions. Since drivers in general drive too closely to one another on the highways, there stopping ability and reaction time is cut significantly shorter than what it should be. If under such circumstances a vehicle starts to experience mechanical problems or something else that would make it stop, the drivers behind that vehicle would have little time to react. High speeds plus poor visibility would start the chain reaction of vehicle collisions. This chain can grow to include hundreds of vehicles, in some well document cases.
Pile ups are particularly deadly, since a solid mass of vehicles is a diffusely obstacle to escape even on foot. If a fire breaks out, it could quickly spread and leave the drivers and passengers stuck in the middle with no where to go. Also, there are many sideways collisions between vehicles, since most drivers end up spinning sideways as they attempt to avoid a collision. Add to this the size and mass of the many commercial trucks that populate all major highways, and the injury and death toll can quickly rise in a pile up.
The scale of these types of pileups can close roadways for days, and can also damage a section of highway, requiring weeks of work to repair and reopen.
It is very difficult to determine the cause of such an accident since it is often impossible to tell if the cause was mechanical failure, negligence, or road debris that caused the initial collision.
