Information on pleurodesis: a surgical procedure to help you manage the pain of mesothelioma

Pleurodesis helps you manage the pain associated with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, a devastating progressive cancer caused by asbestos, can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs that contributes to the pain that you may be experiencing now. Pleurodesis is a surgical procedure to help stop the fluid build-up in your lungs.

“[Pleural mesothelioma] starts on the lining of the lungs,” explains Dr. Dr. Daniel Dupont, a pulmonary specialist working in several hospitals in the Philadelphia area. “The disease grows on that lining area. It grows and restricts the lungs’ ability to expand and contract when you breathe. At the same time, it invades the local tissues. It can invade inward to the lungs and it can invade outward to the chest wall, to the ribs, and the muscles. It can be very painful.”

Weitz & Luxenberg wants to provide you and your family members with as much information on mesothelioma as possible. We have represented countless clients with your disease, and although we cannot begin to understand what you are going through, we have heard the stories of people just like you. Often times, these people were exposed to asbestos directly because handling it was part of their job, or incidentally by working in an area that contained asbestos. However you were exposed, legal options are available to you that can help pay for medical treatments such as a pleurodesis. Weitz & Luxenberg can help guide you through the process of seeking financial compensation.

Why have a pleurodesis?

“This is not a pleasant disease,” says Dr. Dupont. “[Mesothelioma creates] a fluid in a space that normally is only occupied by a couple of drops of fluid in health. And litters and litters, large amounts of fluid can accumulate in this potential space, and press down on the lung tissue. That is in fact one of the reasons why people develop cough, and chest discomfort, and shortness of breath as their symptoms. I can think of any [disease more painful than mesothelioma], honestly.”

The pain of mesothelioma can be managed with pain medication, and surgical procedures such as pleurodesis.

What exactly is a pleurodesis?

A pleurodesis is a surgical procedure in which the space between the pleura is irritated. Doctors cause irritation with Bleomycin, Tetracycline, or other irritants. This causes the tissue to become inflamed, the two sides of the pleural tissue to sick together. By doing this, fluid is unable to build up in this area (MedTerms).
