The Centre’s report recognized an increase in the absolute number of job-related fatalities during the period between 1996 and 2004 – and attributed the rise directly to asbestos exposure.

Due to the long latency period for mesothelioma, the number of deaths related to occupational asbestos exposure is not expected to peak until after 2010-2020.
