What does Stage 4 lung cancer mean?
The stage of lung cancer is an indicator as to how far the cancer has spread. In Stage 4 lung cancer, the cancer is typically in both lungs or has spread to another part of the body e.g. the bones, or has caused fluid accumulation around the lung or heart and that fluid contains cancer cells. Stage 4 is the final stage of lung cancer.
If you or a loved one is suffering from lung cancer, you should know that lung cancer is not caused by smoking alone. A large number of people are diagnosed with lung cancer each year due to exposure to asbestos many decades ago. Often, the exposure to asbestos took place in the workplace. Many mechanics, plumbers, sheet metal workers and others are routinely exposed to asbestos at work. Sadly, many companies failed to provide workers with protective equipment such as masks to prevent asbestos exposure even though they knew that asbestos causes lung cancer and mesothelioma cancer.
