HIP IMPLANTS: NEWS UPDATE
New cementless design offers hope to patients
with failed Stryker hip implants
February 3, 2009 – On the heels of the failed Stryker hip implants (made of a
less durable material and the subject of a national product recall), a new
"cementless" metal cup design is being hailed as a more durable substitute for
patients whose first hip replacements failed, according to an article published
in the February issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Researchers from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago examined the
results of one of the first cementless metal cup designs, and found that
fixation of the implant to bone was extremely durable, even 20 years after
repeat or “revision” hip replacement.
Earlier generation implants relied on the use of bone cement to secure the
implant to the patient’s pelvis and were associated with a higher rate of
failure, particularly when used in patients who had previously had a hip implant
that had failed, according to the research article.
The improved implant, Harris-Galante-1 acetabular metal shell, is
designed to allow a patient’s bone to grow into the implant. Research shows that
it remained fixed in place in 95 percent of hip revision cases at a minimum
follow-up of 20 years.
The cup’s porous surface allows bone and tissue to grow into the device to
keep the hip implant in place.
