State environmental agency fines Sunoco Marcus Hook oil refinery $173,000 for toxic air emissions
Residents living near the Sunoco Marcus Hook plant in Pennsylvania’s Delaware County have reported symptoms of an environmentally caused illness called sarcoidosis disease that may be related to toxic air emissions by a local oil refinery.

January 15, 2010 - Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) this month fined Sunoco Marcus Hook $173,000 in civil penalties for several toxic air-emission releases that occurred in 2008.
State officials said the illegal emissions occurred in May, June and December of that year, and prompted a large number of odor complaints and residential damage claims by the residents of Marcus Hook, Pa.
All Sunoco Marcus Hook violations were related to incidents that occurred in 2008:
- In May, a boiler malfunction released eight tons of carbon monoxide.
- In June, two incidents resulted in 18 tons of volatile organic compounds being released into the air, as well as 1,300 gallons of oil.
- In December, another four tons of nitrogen oxide and eight tons of volatile organic compounds were released into the atmosphere after a compressor shutdown.
According to the DEP, Sunoco will pay more than $173,000 in civil penalties for these infractions.
