January 15, 2010 – Sunoco Inc. will pay more than $173,000 in civil penalties after the U.S. Department of Labor cited the petroleum manufacturer for violations related to a boiler explosion at the Sunoco refinery in Marcus Hook, Pa.
The Sunoco refinery explosion released 8.3 tons of carbon monoxide into the community, according to a January 6 article by The Delaware County Daily Times.
Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced the fine against the Sunoco refinery this week.
The penalties take into account two other 2008 environmental infractions, which state officials said caused odor complaints and prompted property damage claims by many local residents.
Weitz & Luxenberg's environmental division is now accepting cases from Marcus Hook residents diagnosed with respiratory illnesses (such as sarcoidosis disease).
Sunoco refinery violations
This month’s penalty took into account two other environmental violations. In June, 2008, one month after the boiler explosion, the Sunoco refinery illegally released 18.1 tons of volatile organic compounds into the community’s air.
Then, in December 2008, some four tons of nitrogen oxide and eight tons of volatile organic compounds were released into the atmosphere after a compressor shutdown, according to the DEP.
