The five important things you need to know about asbestos exposure in Tennessee

In Tennessee, April 25, 1960, the civil rights movement was in full swing. The US government declared that they were putting an end to voting discrimination in Fayette County (JacksonSun). Strange, new music played the venues of Nashville. The energy of the time was high, but when Ron remembers this time period, he feels lucky to be alive.

"I started working on drilling rigs when I was sixteen and at that time I had no idea about the danger of asbestos…I was a mud engineer in the 1960s; I sat on drill hoppers and mixed 50-lb bags of Asbestos Drilling Mud long before I knew about asbestos-related diseases,” says Ron (LAS).

Ron is not alone, but he is very lucky. Over 1000 Tennessee residents lost their lives to asbestos exposure (EWG 1). During the 1960s, Tennessee clamored to find work as drillers, factory workers, plumbers, and miners – all of which were in danger of deadly asbestos exposure.

Find out the five important things you must know about asbestos in Tennessee, and learn how Weitz & Luxenberg (a major US law firm) can help you find financial stability.

Asbestos exposure was common prior to the 1970s

Asbestos was used as an insulator and fireproofing substance prior to the 1970s. People referred to it as the miracle mineral because it had so many practical applications.

Tennessee’s economy relied heavily on mining and manufacturing. Both industries used great amounts of asbestos (NetState) (ATSDR)

Even one pinch of asbestos dust can kill

“The undisputed medical facts [are that] ... [a]ctual bodily injury, in the form of tissue or cellular damage caused by lodged asbestos fibers, begins shortly after such fibers are first inhaled.”

  • Pittsburgh Corning Corporation, 1998 (EWG 2)

Even a pinch of asbestos dust can have debilitating effects on the body. Those who have been exposed to asbestos for longer periods of time have greater chances of developing diseases, but even those that have only come in contact with asbestos once can develop the fatal disease mesothelioma.

An asbestos mine was located near Tennessee

A former asbestos mine was located in Tennessee’s neighbor state of Missouri. Residents of Tennessee looking for mining work may have traveled there.

When working on an asbestos mine, you are exposing yourself to trillions of asbestos dust particles per day.

Asbestos companies knew they were poisoning people

"We know that you will never lose sight of the fact that perhaps the greatest hazard in your plant is with men handling asbestos. Because just as certain as death and taxes is the fact that if you inhale asbestos dust you get asbestosis."

The above quote was taken from an internal memo from the asbestos company National Gypsum. It reveals that Gypsum, like so many asbestos companies, knew long before the general public that asbestos causes fatal diseases.  The public did not become aware of the dangers of asbestos until the 1970s. This memo was written 1958.

Asbestos companies chose not to inform the general public of the dangers of asbestos in order to continue making large profits off asbestos (EWG 3).
