Weitz & Luxenberg Provides Information on Topamax Dosage
I have frequent migraines and am considering Topamax. What should my dosage be?
Since we are not a medical institution, it is best that you direct that question to your health care provider. Weitz & Luxenberg has created this page to provide you with basic information about Topamax, but specifically medical questions should be directed elsewhere. However, if you require legal advice, we are more than willing to help.
In March 2011, the FDA warned consumers that use of Topamax while pregnant can cause birth defects, most notably cleft palate.
Though marketed as an epilepsy medication, Topamax is also used to treat migraines. According to the Topamax website “the rule is to start low and go slow,” (Topamax) which means that you should start with the smallest possible amount and increase it only if absolutely necessary.
What factors affect dosage?
Your dosage of Topamax you take depends on a number of factors:
Your ailment:
Epilepsy: If you are an epileptic, the recommended dosage is 200 mg twice daily. If used in conjunction with other epilepsy medication, “the dosage of Topamax can range from 100 to 200 mg twice per day.” (E Med TV)
For epilepsy, is recommended by medical professionals that you increase your dosage as follows:
- “First week -- 25 mg twice daily” (E Med TV)
- “Second week -- 50 mg twice daily” (E Med TV)
- “Third week -- 75 mg twice daily” (E Med TV)
- “Fourth week -- 100 mg twice daily” (E Med TV)
- “Fifth week -- 150 mg twice daily” (E Med TV)
- “Sixth week -- 200 mg twice daily.” (E Med TV)
Migraine: If you suffer from migraines, “the recommended Topamax dosage is 50 mg twice per day.” (E Med TV) The reason why the dosage is low is that “Topamax, like many other medications, needs time to build up to the right level in your bloodstream before it is completely effective.” (Topamax)
For migraines, it is recommended by medical professionals that you increase your dosage as follows:
- “First week -- 25 mg once daily in the evening” (E Med TV)
- “Second week -- 25 mg twice daily” (E Med TV)
- “Third week -- 25 mg in the morning and 50 mg in the evening” (E Med TV)
- “Fourth week -- 50 mg twice daily.” (E Med TV)
Your age: Whether prescribing Topamax or another medication, your medical professional will take your age into account. Some medications are better suited for some age groups than others.
Preexisting Medical Conditions: If you are taking medication for another medical condition, your medical professional will decide whether or not it is safe for you to take Topamax. Certain medications do not mix well with others.
What happens if I miss my dose of Topamax?
If you miss a dose of Topamax, “take it as soon as you can, unless you are within 6 hours of taking your next scheduled dose. If you have missed more than one dose, you should contact your medical professional for advice.” (Topamax)
