Weitz & Luxenberg Provides Information on the side effects of Topiramate
Is Topiramate a different drug than Topamax?
No, it’s the same drug. Topiramate is the generic name for Topamax, which, though primarily prescribed to epileptics, is also know to treat other conditions such as migraines. The FDA recently warned that Topamax (Topiramate) can cause serious birth defects when taken during pregnancy. The most common of these birth defects is cleft clip or cleft palate. Like all medications, Topiramate has a number of side effects, some of which are illnesses in and of themselves. Weitz & Luxenberg has created this page to familiarize you with these side effects.
What are the side effects of Topiramate/Topamax?
Paresthesia:Numbness and tingling “can occur anywhere in the body,” (Discovery Health) though it is “most commonly felt in the hands, feet, arms or legs.” (Discovery Health)Those who suffer from paresthesia often describe a pins and needles sensation, similar to what is felt when part of the body falls asleep (the result of pressure being applied to the nerves and arteries for a prolonged period of time).
Fatigue:“Most Topiramate users report feeling fatigue during the early stage of treatment.” (Topamax)
Weight loss:“Some people have reported losing weight while taking Topiramate.” (Topamax) The dosage of Topiramate taken might have something to do with it.
Taste change: Some Topiramate users have reported changes in the tastes of certain foods and drinks, especially carbonated beverages.
Birth defects:Topiramate has been prescribed “to more than 4 million patients,” (E Med TV) including pregnant women. It is classified as a Pregnancy Category D medication, which means that it “may cause harm to your unborn child.” (E Med TV) The most common birth defects are cleft palate (when the roof of the baby’s mouth does not develop normally) and cleft lip (a physical split or separation of the two sides of the upper lip).
The following side effects have also been reported in some Topiramate users:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Memory deficiency
- Loss of Focus
