September 30, 2009 - News Update: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration yesterday issued an alert, warning owners of many late-model Toyota and Lexus models to immediately remove the floor mats on the driver's side of their cars to avoid getting the accelerator stuck.

Toyota is expected to recall some 3.8 million vehicles after five deaths were attributed to a defective floor mat that interferes with the accelerator pedal.

“This is an urgent matter,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “For everyone’s sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration.”

The recall is the largest ever for Toyota and will include many of the most popular Lexus and Toyota vehicles, including Camry sedans in the 2007 to 2010 model years, and Prius hybrid cars from 2004 to 2009.
