News update: Toyota mat recall
September 30, 2009 - Toyota said yesterday that it will recall 3.8 million vehicles because a floor mat in certain models has the potential to cause the accelerator pedal to become stuck.
The government said the floor mat problem has been reported 102 times, and has been linked to 13 crashes, five deaths and 17 injuries. Toyota said incidents like this have been reported since 2004. That could spur a wave of Toyota mat lawsuits nationwide.
Many of the affected models have start-stop buttons, which won’t turn the engine off unless depressed for three seconds. That’s a problem in a panic situation like a stuck accelerator. Most affected models, reportedly, have key ignitions.
The recall, the largest ever for Toyota, will include many of the most popular Lexus and Toyota vehicles, including Camry sedans in the 2007 to 2010 model years, and Prius hybrid cars from 2004 to 2009.
Fatal crash prompts Toyota mat recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration yesterday issued its own alert after police reported a floor mat-related car accident that killed four people outside San Diego on August 28. The car was a 2009 Lexus ES 350 on loan from a dealership to the driver, an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer.
Toyota spokesman on mat recall
Toyota said it was still working with officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to find a remedy and said owners could be notified about the recall as early as next week.
Toyota spokesman Irv Miller said until the company finds a fix, owners should simply take out the removable floor mat on the driver's side and not replace it.
“A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop a vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death,” Miller said.
The Toyota mat recall will include the following models:
