Utah State honors former alumnus and NFL great Merlin Olsen at courtside ceremony
Utah State names Merlin Olsen Field in honor of the famous alumnus, national-league football player, and NBC sportscaster who was recently diagnosed with asbestos-caused mesothelioma cancer.
Weitz & Luxenberg has protected the legal rights of asbestos-injured workers since 1986. And in that time the firm's mesothelioma lawyers have won several billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for clients injured by occupational asbestos exposure.
Utah State football honor
January 5, 2010 - In a half-time ceremony during a recent basketball game at Utah State, one of the university’s most famous alumni, NFL great Merlin Olsen, was recognized for his outstanding contribution to football with a university field named in his honor.
The field inside Romney Stadium will be known as Merlin Olsen Field.
Accompanied by his wife of 47 years, Susan, and their three children and four grandchildren, Olsen walked onto the basketball court and waved back to his adoring fans.
Olsen, 69, is currently undergoing chemotherapy to help treat asbestos-related mesothelioma.
Merlin Olsen sues for asbestos exposure
Merlin Olsen was diagnosed with fatal mesothelioma cancer last year and recently filed suit against his employer, NBC, alleging occupational asbestos exposure.
Olsen is also suing Sherwin-Williams and Lennox Industries, charging their construction products contained asbestos materials and led to an earlier exposure when he was 11 years old, and again when he was an adult working with drywall.
Olsen played his entire 15-year career with the Los Angeles Rams and was elected to the Pro Bowl in 14 of those seasons. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
