Upstate New York VA hospital breaks ground on a new $90-million expansion
Veterans can receive a variety of health services at VA hospitals all across the country. There are currently 153 veteran treatment centers throughout the United States, each providing a wide variety of care options.
For veterans diagnosed with asbestos-related mesothelioma cancer, veterans can receive treatment at a number of VA hospital centers, including the Stratton Medical Center in Albany, N.Y., and the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, S.C.
For vets suffering from cancers requiring a bone marrow transplant, the Puget Sound VA Medical Center in Washington is home to the VA's very first transplant center.
FEATURE STORY
December 2, 2009 - The Veteran's Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., is scheduled to undergo a new $90-million addition that will include a six-story spinal cord injury and disease treatment center.
VA hospital centers are crucial to retired military personnel, as veterans face a number of health issues ranging from depression to fatal forms of cancer, like mesothelioma, the deadliest of asbestos-related cancers.
Mesothelioma often strikes World War II-era veterans as a result of wide exposure to asbestos materials on naval ships and in military aircraft. Due to the long latency period associated with mesothelioma cancer, military veterans typically do not display symptoms until decades after their service.
Slated to open in 2012, the Syracuse VA hospital expansion will accommodate an additional 30 patients and include operating rooms, space for primary health services and a dialysis unit. The facility will also provide outpatient services.
