Recognized for taking the lead in the prosecution of asbestos cases, Weitz & Luxenberg won a landmark consolidated trial in 1991 involving men who had worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the 1940s and 1950s.

We have had 36 clients in that case and collected $75 million. Another case yielded a $64.65 million award for four asbestos plaintiffs in 1996 (NY, docket # 10893/95), and, in 2002, the firm won a $53 million decision in New York for a brake mechanic suffering from mesothelioma (docket No. 12658-00). The Asbestos team has recovered hundreds of millions more for its clients, many of whom formed the basis of the triumphant Allied war effort in the second World War.

Comprised of oxygen, hydrogen, silicon, and different metals, asbestos is classified as a mineral. Fibers made of asbestos are tough, flexible and not flammable. Asbestos also insulates very well and does not break down easily. Asbestos has been used in older plastics, paper products and floor tiles. Often, asbestos fibers are blended with a matter that keeps them together, creating asbestos containing material, otherwise known as ACM. Numerous industrial products are comprised of ACM, for example sealants, cement pipe and insulation.

Large amounts of individuals served in the armed forces and had contact with asbestos for many years not realizing that this could one day result in the dangerous disease: mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma & Asbestosis Mortalities Across the US: 1979-2001 (c/o EWG)

“We have seen first-hand how asbestos has wreaked havoc on Americans working in naval shipyards, automobile plants, and the construction industry. Most often this is through their employers’ conscious choice for profits over a worker's health.”

-- Joseph Patrick Williams, a trial attorney in the Asbestos Litigation department of Weitz & Luxenberg
