Asbestos is a mineral. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen and other metals. Fibers made of asbestos are durable, flexible and flame retardant. Asbestos also insulates very well and does not break down easily. Other asbestos uses include older plastics, paper products and floor tiles. In most cases, asbestos fibers are mixed with a substance that joins them together, producing asbestos containing material, otherwise known as ACM. Various industrial products are comprised of ACM, including sealants, cement pipe and insulation.
