Composed of oxygen, hydrogen, silicon, and various metals, asbestos is classified as a mineral. Fibers made of asbestos are tough, flexible and flame retardant. Asbestos also insulates very well and will not break down easily. Asbestos has been used in older plastics, paper products and floor tiles. Generally, asbestos fibers are combined with a substance that binds them together, producing asbestos containing material, otherwise known as ACM. Many industrial products are made of ACM, for example sealants, cement pipe and insulation.
Thousands of individuals fulfilled their duty to the armed services and had contact with asbestos for an extended amount of time unaware of the fact that this could one day lead to the deadly disease: mesothelioma.
