Asbestos is a mineral. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen and other metals. Fibers made of asbestos are durable, flexible and flame retardant. Asbestos also insulates very well and does not break down easily. Other asbestos uses include older plastics, paper products and floor tiles. Generally, asbestos fibers are mixed with a matter that keeps them together, constructing an asbestos containing material, otherwise known as ACM. Lots of industrial products are comprised of ACM, such as sealants, cement pipe and insulation.
