Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. The following is a list of people at higher hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- Individuals with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or troubles with their respiratory system
Four specific diseases result from asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is vital to seek a doctor's advice if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language unintelligible to the typical patient. Don't be afraid to question your doctor about your situation. If you don't understand your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all those who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer.
If you or someone you love has developed lung cancer after being exposed to asbestos, we want to help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below starts the process.
