Certain types of people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. Read each of the subsequent items for the main characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Individuals with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or respiratory issues
Four specific diseases have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable warning signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to see a doctor if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language incomprehensible to the typical patient. If you are confused, you can ask your doctor about your condition. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, request that he put it in plain words so you can better know your condition. All men and women who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by exposure to asbestos, such as lung cancer.
