Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. The following is a list of those with heightened hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- People with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or respiratory issues
The following are the ailments which have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is important to get tested if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language that is perplexing to the typical patient. Don't fear asking your doctor about your situation. If you don't fully understand your doctor, request that he put it in plain words so you can better understand. All men and women who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for deadly diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as mesothelioma.
If you or someone you love has developed lung cancer after having contact with asbestos, we can help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below starts the process.
