There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of those with increased danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Anyone with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or troubles with their respiratory system
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek medical council if you presume that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language that is perplexing to the typical patient. Be sure to ask your physician about your health problem. If you don't understand your doctor, ask her to break it down so can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer.
