Unfortunately, the detectable signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.

It is imperative to seek a professional opinion if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language that is perplexing to the average person. Don't fear asking your medical professional about your situation. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better understand.
