There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of people at higher hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- Those with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Those who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or difficulty breathing
The following are the ailments which have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is a necessity to seek a medical opinion if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language that is baffling to the average person. Don't be afraid to question your doctor about your circumstance. If you don't understand your doctor, have him break it down so can better know your condition. All men and women who have participated in the United States Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.
Surviving with asbestos-related diseases can be exhausting. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
