Read below to see if you may be at risk for exposure to asbestos. Read each of the bullet points below for the primary characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Those with breathing problems
- People with extended exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or troubles with their respiratory system
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek a professional opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language unclear to the layman. If you are confused, you can ask your doctor about your state. If you don't fully understand your doctor, request that he clarify so you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg believes that all people who have participated in the American Armed orces should receive the services they deserve.
