Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. The following is a list of people at elevated risk of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Individuals with extended exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or respiratory issues
The following are the ailments which result from asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is necessary to get tested if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language that may be unlcear to the average person. If you are confused, you can ask your physician about your condition. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, request that he break it down so can better understand. All citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.
Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation regardless of when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to initiate the process.
