Could you have been exposed to asbestos? Read the following to see if you fall under a category at risk. Read each of the subsequent items for the main characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Those with breathing problems
- Those with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or troubles with their respiratory system
Four specific diseases are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is important to see a doctor if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language unintelligible to the layman. If you are confused, you can ask your medical professional about your status. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, have him break it down so can better understand. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all citizens who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as mesothelioma.
