Do you fit the description below? If so, you may want to consider getting tested for exposure to asbestos. Read each of the bullet points below for the primary characteristics of individuals who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- Individuals with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or troubles with their respiratory system
Four specific diseases have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is vital to get tested if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors sometimes speak a language unintelligible to the average person. Don't be afraid to question your doctor about your status. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to clarify so you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all people who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as mesothelioma.
Coping with asbestos-related diseases can be challenging. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
