There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of those with increased risk of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- People with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related vocations, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or troubles with their respiratory system
Four specific diseases result from asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek a medical opinion if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language puzzling to the average person. If you are confused, you can ask your physician about your condition. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, request that he clarify so you can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all men and women who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for deadly diseases such as mesothelioma.
If you or someone you love has developed mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos, we can help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below begins the process.
