Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. Read each of the bullet points below for the most common characteristics of individuals who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- People with protracted exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or respiratory issues
In general, there is a group of diseases that result from asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is crucial to seek a medical opinion if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language that could be confusing to the average person. Be sure to ask your medical professional about your state. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, get him to explain it in a way that you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all those who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the services they deserve.
