Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. The following is a list of people at heightened danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- People with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or difficulty breathing
In general, there is a group of diseases that are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to get tested if you presume that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language unclear to the average person. You should not hesitate to ask your doctor about your situation. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, ask her to break it down so can better understand. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all those who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as lung cancer.
Dealing with mesothelioma can be challenging. Weitz & Luxenberg can help alleviate some of the hardship by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
