Read below to see if you may be at risk for exposure to asbestos. Read each of the subsequent items for the most significant characteristics of people who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Those with breathing problems
- Individuals with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or irregular breathing patterns
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is important to seek a medical opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Added tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language puzzling to the layman. You should not hesitate to ask your doctor about your health problem. If you don't fully understand your doctor, get him to put it in plain words so you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all those who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as mesothelioma.
