Could you have been exposed to asbestos? Read the following to see if you fall under a category at risk. The following is a list of those with increased threat of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Anyone with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or breathing problems
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is imperative to seek a doctor's advice if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language that is perplexing to the layman. Be sure to ask your doctor about your condition. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, request that he explain it in a way that you can better understand.
