Various people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. The following is a list of those with increased hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- Individuals with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or respiratory issues
Four specific diseases are associated with asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is a necessity to seek medical council if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language that is perplexing to the layman. Be sure to ask your physician about your circumstance. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, request that he put it in plain words so you can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all citizens who have participated in the American Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for deadly diseases such as mesothelioma.
