Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. The following is a list of those with heightened hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
  • Individuals with breathing problems
  • People with protracted exposure to asbestos
  • Those who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
  • Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or breathing problems

Certain illnesses are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.

It is crucial to get tested if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language that is perplexing to the layman. You should not hesitate to ask your physician about your state. If you don't fully understand your doctor, have him break it down so can better know your condition. All men and women who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as mesothelioma.

Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation regardless of when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to initiate the process.
