There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of people at stronger threat of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- Anyone with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or respiratory issues
Four specific diseases are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek medical council if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language that could be confusing to the layman. If you are confused, you can ask your medical professional about your health problem. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, ask her to clarify so you can better know your condition. All men and women who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.
