Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. The following is a list of individuals at increased hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Individuals with extended exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or troubles with their respiratory system
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek a doctor's advice if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language that may be unlcear to the typical patient. As a patient, you should be sure to question your doctor about your state. If you don't understand your doctor, request that he break it down so can better understand.
