There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. Read each of the subsequent items for the cardinal characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Those with breathing problems
- Individuals with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or respiratory issues
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek a professional opinion if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Supplementary tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors sometimes speak a language that is perplexing to the average person. You should not hesitate to ask your doctor about your status. If you don't fully understand your doctor, get him to put it in plain words so you can better know your condition. All citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for deadly diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.
If you or someone you love has developed lung cancer after being exposed to asbestos, we want to help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below starts the process.
