Unfortunately, the detectable warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.

It is important to see a doctor if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests can include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors can speak a language that can be confusing to the layman. Don't be afraid to question your physician about your status. If you don't totally understand your doctor, ask her to put it in plain words so you can better understand.
