EPA found exfoliated vermiculite and vermiculite concentrate ore in surface soils
The RPB conducted an initial site visit on February 24, 2000 as part of a national evaluation of facilities that received vermiculite ore from the Libby, Montana mine owned by W.R. Grace.
The initial investigation consisted of a brief inspection of the former processing building and property, discussions with MLB, and interviews with local officials and some businesses currently operating in the area.
During the initial investigation, EPA observed both exfoliated vermiculite and vermiculite concentrate (ore) in the surface soils around the building, along the railroad tracks, and in the truck parking lot.
