Certain types of people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. Read each of the following points for the chief characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- People with breathing problems
- Anyone with extended exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or breathing problems
Certain illnesses have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is crucial to seek a professional opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Added tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors sometimes speak a language that could be confusing to the typical patient. You should not hesitate to ask your medical professional about your status. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, have him explain it in a way that you can better know your condition. All those who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as mesothelioma.
Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation regardless of when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to begin the process.
