Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. The following is a list of those with stronger threat of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- People with extended exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related vocations, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or troubles with their respiratory system
In general, there is a group of diseases that are associated with asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible warning signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek a medical opinion if you presume that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language puzzling to the typical patient. Don't fear asking your doctor about your status. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, have him explain it in a way that you can better get the picture. All citizens who have participated in the United States Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen.
