Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. The following is a list of people at higher danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- Those with extended exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or respiratory issues
Four specific diseases result from asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek medical council if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language puzzling to the typical patient. Don't be afraid to question your medical professional about your state. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better get the picture. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all citizens who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as mesothelioma.
Coping with lung cancer can be daunting. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
