Could you have been exposed to asbestos? Read the following to see if you fall under a category at risk. The following is a list of people at stronger chance of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- Individuals with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related vocations, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or irregular breathing patterns
The following are the ailments which are associated with asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to get tested if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Added tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language that is baffling to the typical patient. Don't fear asking your doctor about your health problem. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, have him clarify so you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all people who have participated in the American Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as mesothelioma.
