Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. The following is a list of people at elevated danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- Anyone with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or respiratory issues
Four specific diseases result from asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible warning signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek medical council if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language unclear to the layman. Don't fear asking your physician about your situation. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to put it in plain words so you can better understand. Weitz & Luxenberg believes that all citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for deadly diseases such as mesothelioma.
If you or someone you love has developed lung cancer after exposure to asbestos, let us help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below begins the process.
